Laser hair removal or reduction is the process through which light is applied to the skin, this light is converted into heat energy and is absorbed into the melanin of the hair, destroying the follicle. This leads to a rapid rise in temperature in the hair and such thermal damage destroys the hair follicle and prevents new hair from growing. Hair colour and skin type play a crucial role in the successful outcome of the procedure. The fundamental principle is that the pigment of the hair, but not the pigment of the skin, should absorb the laser light energy. Hence, there must be a sufficient difference between the levels of melanin in the hair and the level of melanin in the skin.
