Caring for Skin After Treatments

Different skin treatments require different healing processes. From mild post-laser hair removal to more intensive care following skin resurfacing. In this article, we outline the care process following the three most common skin treatments including chemical peels, skin resurfacing, and laser hair removal.

For all laser treatments:

  • During the first two days after treatment, clients should be careful to prevent further irritation of the treated area. It is generally recommended that patients should avoid strenuous exercise, spas and shaving or plucking for the first 24 hours following treatment.
  • Before and after treatment, clients should apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30. They should also avoid sun tanning for at least 10 days and until all redness or discoloration is gone.
  • Apply a cooling cream such as Aloe Vera to the treated area.
  • To alleviate temporary discomfort, swelling or redness, patients may apply cold packs or take a mild pain reliever.
  • As long as the skin is not broken, clients may continue wearing makeup, however it should be applied delicately and avoid excessive rubbing.
  • If any treated area becomes increasingly painful or shows any signs of infection patients should contact the clinic or a health professional immediately.

Laser Hair Removal

In general, skin care after laser hair removal is very simple. Patients may experience some mild irritation following the procedure which should subside within three to five days. The Candela GentleLASE is designed to work on clients with dark hair and light skin, while the GentleYAG works best on darker skin tones. Patients should be reminded that it can take up to 4 weeks for treated hair to fall out and the following visit should be after 5 to 8 weeks.

Chemical Peels

Skin that has been exposed to chemical peels needs intense hydration to promote healthy, new skin and prevent excessive peeling, redness and dryness.  Most chemical peels will leave skin feeling dry and red for up to one week following treatment, however, a noninvasive peel skin may leave skin slightly red for only a few hours. Most skin needs to be kept hydrated with a light moisturizer and makeup can be applied within 2 days.

Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing for acne scarring or pigmentation can offer dramatic improvements to the skin. The Candela GentleLASE and Candela Smoothbeam provide long lasting results that are FDA approved. Care following these procedures is minimal and side-effects are rare.

Laser Hair Removal and Ingrown Hairs

Laser hair removal is the safest and most effective treatment for ingrown hairs occurring in both men and women.

Ingrown hairs are a common problem for both men and women. Also known as pseudo folliculitis, ingrown hairs can be both a painful and unsightly skin irritation. These extremely common afflictions are also known as razor bumps because they are usually aggravated by shaving.

Ingrown hairs occur when the sharp tip of the hair grows just above the skin and then curls back into the dermis causing an inflammation. The ensuing bumps usually appear as pink or skin coloured and often a small part of the hair may be seen just under the skin. Ingrown hairs tend to be more common in areas with coarse hair, such as the bikini line for women and the beard and neck for men. Improper shaving techniques are the major cause of ingrown hairs, as well as other aggressive hair removal procedures such as waxing.

In recent years there has been a rise in the number of staph infections due to shaving and infections resulting from irritated, broken skin and ingrown hairs. Doctors have even started recommending that individuals who are prone to ingrown hairs try laser hair removal as an efficient and safe way of removing unwanted hair permanently. Laseraid’s Candela GentleLASE 755 nm alexandrite lasers are equipped with Zimmer Cryo cooling technology. These lasers remove hair directly from the follicle, permanently reducing unwanted hair. Most patients find a permanent reduction in hair after six to eight treatments.

Fraxel Treatment for Sun Damaged or Scarred Skin

Laseraid’s Starlux pulsed light system is among the most advanced on the market for fractional skin resurfacing.

For many patients with problematic facial skin, fractional resurfacing treatments can be a safe and easy treatment option. Commonly known as “fraxel,” the procedure is used to effectively treat wrinkles and fine lines, acne scars, and sun damaged or aged skin. Laseraid’s Palomar StarLux is one of the world’s most advanced pulsed light systems. Designed for a variety of skin types, this versatile machine can perform laser hair removal as well as ablative and non-ablative skin resurfacing, photofacials for pigmented skin, removal of vascular lesions, skin tightening, leg vein treatment and acne scarring.

As fraxel treatments generate buzz in the media, more and more people are flocking to this transformative technology. For patients whose skin is ageing prematurely or has visible acne scarring, fraxel resurfacing can help achieve smoother, fresher, younger looking skin, improve tone and texture, diminish pores, remove brown spots, acne scars, surgical scars and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Fractional resurfacing works by treating thousands of microscopic areas of skin, using laser energy that penetrate beneath the skin’s surface to eliminate old and damaged skin cells. This stimulates the body’s healing process by replacing damaged skin with glowing, healthy skin. Treatments target between 5 to 50 percent of the skin’s surface, leaving the remaining skin to heal the treated areas. The treatment is so precise that it is safe to use on delicate areas like the face, neck, chest and hands. Most patients report feeling a sun-burned sensation which dissipates within a few days.

The results are both immediate and progressive. Following the procedure, patients can expect to see an immediate difference once the healing process is complete. Skin will appear softer, brighter and the tone will become more even. Progressive results occur over the next year as the deeper layers of skin continue to heel. Clinical studies have shown that maximum results appear after 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Laser Treatment for All Skin Types

The Candela GentleLASE is one of the most effective lasers on the market for treating all skin types.

As laser hair removal becomes more popular, many people have been led to believe that lasers may be ineffective in treating their skin and hair type. Laser technology has advanced at a remarkable rate over the past two decades and lasers have emerged that are able to target most skin and hair combinations. In general, laser hair removal is more effective when there is a high contrast between the skin and hair colour, as the melanin is more easily targeted. However, the Candela GentleLASE series is able to effectively treat most skin types and offers unmatched treatment capabilities in permanent hair reduction.

Laseraid is Australia’s leading supplier of the renowned Candela GentleLASE technology. The Candela series works on all skin types and most hair colours (except white hair) effectively removing unwanted hair after multiple treatments. Laseraid seeks to provide each of its clients with the safest and most effective products that allow for maximum patient comfort at the most affordable price. The Candela GentleLASE devices are the “gold standard” of hair removal and are able to be used on all skin types and across most hair colours.

Laseraid is also the supplier of the Zimmer Cooling device; which cools skin before, during and after laser energy has been applied. The Cryo 6’s nine fan speeds permit more airflow options and ensure optimum patient comfort. By moving away from cooling gels and pairing its laser machines with Zimmer devices, Laseraid remains at the forefront of the aesthetic marketplace.
