Invest in Medical Device Stocks Now

Palomar Announces Financial Results for Fourth Quarter and 2012 Fiscal Year

The laser and light-based systems manufacturer Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc., announced its latest financial results for 2012. In contrast to its reported loss of $1.9 million in 2011, the business had a net income of $2.3 million in its fourth quarter figures for 2012.

The organisation’s product revenues, gross margins, and local and international revenues were all up in the fourth quarter. In its 2012 year-over-year figures, the company had a net loss of $6.2 million, compared with $7.4 million in income in 2011.

Product revenues, gross margin, North American revenues, and international revenues all recorded an increase in the 2012 year-over-year figures.

Joseph P. Caruso, the organisation’s CEO, stated that Palomar was pleased with the results. Caruso revealed that the fourth quarter was the first quarter in which the business had reported a profit since the global recession, with the exception of the third quarter of 2011.

The business continues to follow through with new technology investments and product development in aesthetic light consumer devices, including the creation of products such as the Vectus hair removal laser.

Cynosure’s Plans for Palomar Takeover

Cynosure Inc., a manufacturer of aesthetic laser systems, recently entered into an agreement with Palomar Medical Technologies Inc., a rival aesthetic laser system manufacturer, for a $294 million takeover.

The combined revenue of the two organisations was $234 million in 2012. Both board of directors voted unanimously to agree to the takeover, which will be complete by the third quarter of 2013.

Cynosure’s takeover bid is aimed at boosting its customer base by introducing complements to its current product line, as well as strengthening its distribution network to more than 100 countries worldwide.

Cynosure’s takeover was said to have been partly motivated by the patents that Palomar holds, which number more than 40.

The agreement will involve Cynosure paying $13.65 a share for Palomar, issuing 5.3 million shares and paying $147 million in cash. The acquisition will leave Palomar with a cash balance of $87 million, and the company will remain free of debt after the agreement is complete.

New Laser Hair Removal System has Universal Application

Effectiveness of Fractional Laser Treatment for Old Burn Scars

There may be new hope for old burn scars, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen. Dr Merete Haedersdal’s study has found that the appearance of burn scars can significantly improve after being treated with a fractional laser.

The study involved using fractional nonablative lasers on 20 patients who had old burn scars.

The treatment was carried out over the course of three months, and used special techniques that deliver the laser beams both superficially and deeply into the burn tissue. A control group or untreated group was used to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment, so that the researchers could compare treated and untreated skin.

While there were no major differences between treated and untreated tissue after a month, there were noticeable differences at the three-month and six-month intervals.

Dr Haedersdal noted that fractional treatment yields continued improvement over time, even months after treatment ceased.

The study also found that transplanted skin responded better to fractional laser treatment than non-transplanted skin did to the same laser treatment.

Using Laser Treatment for Brown Spots

Brown spots are one of the most common types of skin conditions. Spots are usually caused by sun exposure, which leads to the body producing melanin to protect the skin.

There are different ways to prevent and treat brown spots, and they range from sun protection to in-clinic treatment options.
